You must apply for Basic health care insurance in the Netherlands when:

• You work in paid employment or are self-employed in The Netherlands.
• You work in The Netherlands for short periods of time (seasonal work).
• You work part-time in The Netherlands.

The Basic Insurance covers standard healthcare, such as visits to the general practitioner. Every resident of the Netherlands is required to have Basic Insurance. Each year, the Dutch government determines what is included in the basic package. Therefore, the content of the Basic Insurance is the same with every health insurer.

An additional health insurance covers medical expenses that are not included in your Basic Insurance. This can include alternative care, physiotherapy, glasses, or contact lenses.

Everyone over the age of 18 has a mandatory deductible of €385. This means that you pay the first €385 of your healthcare costs covered by the Basic Insurance yourself. The deductible applies to most care from the Basic Insurance, such as hospital care, medication, and blood tests. Have you fully used your deductible? Have you paid the first €385 yourself? Then you receive full reimbursement as determined by law.
